We can't take it anymore!
Here is our take on films that have us talking - for a lot of different reasons!
Everyone probably agrees that the Coen Brothers deliver quirky in a way that makes it more like the normal it really is. Inside Llewyn Davis is no exception as we experience a few days in the world of an itinerant musician who just doesn't fit unless he is playing his own music. This guy is so self absorbed that even though he has an idea of how original his music is, it isn't enough to overcome the fact that he has never quite learned how to like himself. Another exceptional personal expose aptly delivered by by Joel & Ethan and molded Oscar Isaac.

Definitely not taking a cue from the fine makers of Star Trek films, "The Amazing Spiderman 2" while giving us some of the old story has reinvented itself with a great, somewhat surprising storyline. The beauty here is that the old info is only used to help us better understand the character, not to rehash the same story with modern techniques. Though Spideys need to balance his inner battles is part of the brand of this film also and shows up in almost every frame. That said, I am now such a fan of Andrew Garfield. The kid pulls it off. Electro was a bit over the edge but Jamie Fox gave it a good try.

Based on the true story of one of the greatest modern-day treasure hunts in history. "The Monuments Men" is an action-thriller focusing on a hodge-podge of art professionals who came together in an unlikely World War II platoon to beat Hitler in his quest to own the world's great art treasures. Or, better said, the world's greatest art treasures owned by Jews. Written and starring George Clooney and an ensemble cast that doesn't quite jell as we all hoped they would. But all in all a compelling story about saving the world's treasures, but not the magnificent buildings that housed them.

Did you ever notice that many movies tell a story about a short period, a few days, in someone's life - American Hustle tells the slightly longer story, a few weeks (though the narrator speaks of more time) in the life of Irving Rosenfeld and Sydney Prosser. The film is a semi-fictional take on the 1970s post-watergate Abscam FBI sting and tells a real-life story about those who believe the "end always justifies the means." Christian Bale and Amy Adams are great as wacky con people lovers and Bradley Cooper's crazed doufis FBI agent portrayal is entertaining. But Jeremy Renner as Camden, New Jersey Mayor Carmine Polito is so damn good he became the arch-"hero" for me. Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and, yes even Louis C.K. give good performances. American Hustle is directed by David O. Russell who gave us Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees, The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook. The guy has it down pretty well.

Well, here is another worldwide best-selling book series (by Cassandra Clare) that needs titillating energy between its stars, though Lily Collins who plays a newly discovered Shadowhunter is certainly capable, setting the screen on fire. Instead of werewolves and vampires as the archtype heroes think demon hunters chasing demons of the most ugly variety. Instead of living in a beautiful romantic forest these demons are from an alternate dimension known as the Downworld. Though not as easy to follow as some films, I was glued to the screen most of the time.

Ready for a newer meaner Riddick who doesn't mind talking about S-E-X? One that is more a determined killing machine? That's what you are going to see when you settle in to the second third of your popcorn. All action and little on much anything else, "Riddick" tries to tell the story of the time our hero, newly crowned god, wanted by fortune hunters everywhere, yearns for the elusive planet Furnia even though he is surrounded by fairly naked beauties trying their best to keep him happy. Trouble is, only his enemy knows where it is. You get it, that's when things get dicey for Riddick. BTW I never found out why he wanted to go. With spx by far better than the first two films, it ain't Pitch Black, then again maybe it is.

Our boy Wolverine despite his ability to reach in and grab his own heart by the throat, is starting to show some age. Oh no wait a minute I think we am talking about Hugh Jackman. All the same, pretty buff for a guy in his 40s. This episode delivers a new yet older classic Wolverine in an existential eastern catharsis. Should he stay angry or give in to the urges all humans have, super hero or otherwise.

Christ, who was that masked man? Or rather, what was that masked man movie? This flick bounced back and forth between a mock-up on 50's TV westerns and a buddy film and in a triumvirate of frustration - an action flick. Lord help me understand. Gore, I wanted "The Mexican" and you gave me "Pirates of the Caribbean."

What is not to like about buddy movies that match up the ying and yang of personalities, 'tight-assed' with 'I don't give a crap.' For the most part as long as their lips match the dialog sooner or later some part of the movie will be entertaining. Well, in this film pretty much the whole thing is entertaining. These two chicks work well together, very well. The film may be the best comedy of the year.

We like our Tatum dancing without a gun in his hand but White House Down is entertainment of the summer movie kind. Do we need to spell this movie out for you. Someone is pissed and takes over the White House. In doing so we find that our armed forces are outgunned and out smarted. The fact that it is preposterous to believe that we can be so inept in protecting the US's most beloved house isn't missed here. The last five minutes had me nuts and in "WTF" overload but all in all not a bad film.

The last time I felt the way I did walking out of this movie was the time this beautiful woman smiled and walked toward me only to find she was smiling at the guy behind me. That is, disappointing but... there was a moment. Sandler phoned this one in while he was on vacation. No character deveopment, over the top climax scene even for him and underused talent. What a shame!

This movie will surprise you...but maybe only if you live in Central New York. It opens wonderfully with a depiction of lacrosse as it was originally played, as "The Creator's Game." Producers Onondaga Indian Nation should be commended for filling the film with American Indian legend and values. Acting by the supporting cast was surprisingly good for a CNY film. The lead though needed more spark IMO. It is a formula film with a message worth hearing. Look for not so subtle messaging going on throughout the film like the color of uniforms etc.
This movie might be well viewed at the admission price but better viewd on DVD.
Terribly manipulative and heart warmingly evocative, this film dares to make you feel good. It seems once 21, our star Tim discovers he can travel in time and change what has happened in his life. One can imagine the possibilities to relive a situation that didn't go well. Sounds like the same old thing, but thanks to fine acting, undeniable magic between the players and a fairly good script from director Richard Curtis, it works. The triangle of Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams and Bill Nighy is undeniably and perceptively real.

My Dad used to tell me the story of a turtle and a scorpion who needed to get across the stream. It is the same story only with DeNiro. Flash forward to the Manzoni's, a notorious mafia family who get relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program. I like Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron and John D'Leo for good performances in the film. Here is who I do not like - director Luc Besson for taking the story too far and Tommy Lee Jones for mailing in the same old actor.

In this sequel to Machete, the seemingly invincible scary looking, fairly one-dimensional Mexican (Danny Trejo) is recruited by the U.S. government to help track down an arms dealer in Mexico who's looking to launch a weapon into space. The film from director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Desperado) is what you expect - grind house debauchery of the most weird and expensive kind. Performances by Amber Heard, Michelle Rodriguez and William Sadler make this movie. Mel Gibson and Carlos - maybe not!
This movie is well viewed at the admission price basically because I like films with intestines.
I was surprised to like “Mr. Selfridge,” on PBS’s “Masterpiece Classic.” At first I thought it was Jeremy Piven who returns to TV after his Emmy and Golden Globe wins for his performance as Ari Gold in the hit HBO comedy series “Entourage.” It is not (but it helped). Piven plays Gordon Selfridge, the over the top American founder of the Selfridge Department Store in London. The story is set in the early 1900s and pulls off the angst and chaos of department store life from the top and from the very bottom. It is TV at its best.
This TV show is worth the price of cable.
What a bunch of beautifully made CG crap. This movie is confusing, fascinating, action filled, confusing and puzzling. I have never come out of a movie needing to see previous versions of a flick just to make sure I got the character arcs right more than this film. (Director) Bryan (Singer) what have you done to these guys. Still, its a movie only a few directors could pull off. Just wished there was time for two of Hollywood's greatest actors (Ian McKellen as Magneto and Patrick Stewart as Professor X) to interact a little, no... alot more. I love those x-men!
This movie is ok at the admission price, but beware it will screw with your brain.
If you told me I would like a movie about yet another introvert who falls for, well I'll stop here. I loved, loved 'Her.' Scarlett Johansson's voice as the quasi-sentient computer program grabbed me for the whole show. Spike Jonze delivers a chemistry driven story that was just right for the always not quite centered Joaquin Phoenix, as a man struggling after a bad break-up. Go see this movie, you won't look at your ipad the same way again!

This film recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European masterpiece hotel, deftly played by Ralph Fiennes. This film is such a glorious adventure, a film journey that needs patience to enjoy and a young heart to dig it. Few storytellers but for the likes of Wes Anderson would and could tell this story with so much confidence. Congrats to Fox Searchlight Pictures for making this weird and delightful farce. Go see it if you are in the mood for wacky.

It is good - Good acting by the leads, better than average production values and a compelling story just a bit bogged down by predictability. Most stories like this are told because they are success stories. We watch and through empathy and a need to see ourselves in the lead, experience the personality arc of an individual whose life is pained by unfinished business and painful experiences as a young person. The story brings us through the period when the lead comes close and ultimately hits the wall. For me, the only failure of the film was not blending the Christian values style of therapy with the leads need for recovery as well as it may have. Especially considering the juxtaposed ending and closing screen shots. All in all though a good film well worth the time and energy. I enjoyed it.

Okay I admit it! The thought of seeing an independent Scarlett Johansson sci-fi film about the erotic escapades of an alien had me excited to see this film. What I saw was a brilliant and patient expose' of innocence and raw magnetic sex appeal and its affect on people. This predator becomes prey story reminds of early Godard and maybe the films of the early existentialist movement but told with a modern artists cynical take on life and what motivates us most. Johansson underplays the role well and to the point where I do not understand if she was well suited as the sexy and aloof alien or not. One thing I do know - "Under the Skin", Jonathan Glazer's first film since 2004's "Birth," just may be special because it asks a lot of questions we all want answers to.
This movie is well viewed at the admission price but not for everybody.
It is official, I'm a Captain America groupee and it is all because of this film and a little because of Chris Evans. I grew up a diehard Thor fanatic but two movies in on each and an Avengers for goodluck, its Cap I want to be with. This film has it all and even has time to answer some character development questions. Lots and lots and lots of action interspersed with story development seems to be the key.
You already know this but - This movie is well viewed at the admission price.
Many people walk out of the theater wondering, did I see a good Kevin Costner movie? It can't be! It is true but the real question is it because of Costner or because it is about footbal and everyman's fascination with the workings of organized sports and the shenanigans that go on behind the scenes. Either way, on the day of the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver (Costner) had an opportunity to save football in Cleveland and may have.

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine - and after watching two hours Depp one dimensionally play this character, who gives a crap! It is the same old story of love and glory and digitally based life forms. For my money until we can create a computer that has the ability to fear the consequences of its actions all we have is Terminator all over again.

"I, Frankenstein," is written for the screen and directed by Stuart Beattie. It is based on the graphic novel "I, Frankenstein" by Kevin Grievous, and brought to life by a cast that includes my favorites like Aaron Eckhart and the over-used Bill Nighy. It is a non-stop action ride that just happens to include Frankenstein instead of the usual underworld characters. Nothing new here folks but great special effects. A little disappointing is that the 3D version isn't so much to write home about.
This movie is well viewed at the admission price if you don't think about it.
A perfectly titled flick that aptly describes my feeling two reels in watching this film as I wanted to leave the theater badly, but stuck it out hoping it would get better. Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles (soon to be Mr Fantastic) Teller star in this mostly waste of two hours or so better used praying for world peace flick. It is about three best friends who find themselves where we've all been trying to figure out relationships. Don't get me wrong, it starts out well, just never delivers.

I asked myself if Tom Clancy, who died last October, would like this latest movie, a prequel in the life of Jack Ryan. The film introduces a shaky Chris Pine, (aka Captain James T. Kirk,) to the lead role of Jack Ryan. While not "The Hunt for Red October" which came out in 1984, it is, you will find, an enjoyable spy flick with a credible story line and it is well acted. It answers some personal questions about Ryan helping to round out our understanding. Oh, by the way, I think Clancy would be just fine with it.

Dallas buyers Club has been nominated for 6 Oscars and another 40 wins & 27 nominations. Its about prejudice, pride and fear of death. It is also about redemption and understanding and love for oneself and one another, all tied up telling the story of the early Aids epidemic. Matthew McConaughey lost 47 pounds for his role as an AIDS patient and truly looked terribly gaunt. And through it all his performance was magnificent, his best. Even having said that , it was Jared Leto as Rayon who steals the show. So involved, he at one point, went grocery shopping in character at a local Whole Foods store earning leers from the customers.

The same people that brought us Twilight brought us The Legend of Hercules. I have one question - what happened? Of course, if one looks back at the previous attempts to make a Hercules movie the Steve Reeves version comes to mind, this verson would be the better of the two. It does a good job telling us how all the players came to be. Certainly more brawn than brains in these flicks. Anyway, this movie brings a great many new actors to the action genre. It is two-to-one that Kellan Lutz (Hercules) will be one of them. This film is directed by Renny Harlin, he is the most successful Finnish film director in the history of Hollywood.

Mary Poppins is one of those films that grows on you. After seeing it I was first to spell supercal... in my class. I always thought it was because of Julie Andrews charm but after watching "Saving Mr Banks" I am now sure it was not. In this captivating film, Emma Thompson plays M.P. author P.L. Travers whose prickly personality we find was fermented more from childhood experiences than from hard wired personality traits. It is those very childhood experiences that gave M.P. its believabilty even though common sense says impossible and gives this movie raw material. Emma is the star here blowing away Tom Hanks and Paul Giamatti who are pretty damn good. The film doesn't answer all questions and probably skews the Walt Disney scenes as Hank's version of Walt comes across fatherly instead of the movie mogul tyrant we have forgiven Disney for being.

Today I went to see Grudge Match and surprisingly it didn't rain cats and dogs. I thought maybe so because Stallone and DeNiro starring in the same film is weird. Any self respecting film person understands the underlying premise - Rocky meets Raging Bull. It just may have been a great film in 1980, now it is farce played out for us, the audience, for irony and laughs. Seems it would have been better with more old-timers like Alan Arkin in it. These guys look old.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues
Help me, I think I am going crazy because I saw Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues last night and still kinda like it (But then again, maybe ...I'M BLIND!!!) The film continues the story of top rated San Diego newsman, Ron Burgundy played by Will Ferrell. Also back to show us more of their less than right personalities are Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), weather man Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), man on the street Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner). More Kristen Wiig would have been better, but leave your brain and common sense at the door if you go see this movie. You will like it better.

This is a long very well executed movie. It may be Leonardo DiCaprio's finest most convincing performance to date as Jordan Belfort the shark-like penile weilding uber-salesperson founder of what is probably the worst stock company ever born. It is hard to believe, but not even the sight of totally naked beautiful, I mean beautiful people in this film could take away from his luster. Beware - It drags at the start of the 3rd act but it is seriously worth staying for. Martin Scorsese has another fine DiCapresque look at a group of people who take the world by the balls and suffer the rewards and consequences as a result.

Frozen, loosely based on Hans Christian Anderson's story "The Snow Queen," represents the 2014 start of a new modern day Disney look. 3D and modern non-Disney original music made it a bit of a surprise but whoo cares - it is damn good animation all the same.

Baby boomers beware - This film is filled with baby boomer nostalgia. The kind of nostalgia that you want to remember and the kind you are happy to forget. The acting by the leads is as good as anyone would want it to be but I thought the movie as a whole was a bit slow and clanky. All the same take your kids and then have a discussion about the times we grew up in.

Elysium has everything you want in a sci-fi drama thriller. An anti-hero, a hero, subjugation, sky travel and the knowledge that the future doesn't seem to be able to change mankind's lesser angels and base needs, namely, jealousy and greed. The problem for me with Elysium is that the lead while somewhat convincing just didn't get my heart stings properly stirred. One more thing, why does the future always have to look like a South American ghetto. For crying out loud, we can cure cancer in the future and not invent a quick laying brick?

The back-to-back play in this buddy movie between Danzel and Mark Wahlberg is bright and sometimes felt genuine. I don't like my Wahlberg sappy and he just was at times in this movie. Considering he is up against Mr. Washington may be the reason for his over-acting. 2 Guns has its moments but doesn't come together like a good jello mold should. The real acting here was by Bill Paxton who plays his role to perfection.

Well, my wife laughed so hard she lost her breath at one point. This is a silly, moronic, infantile, gross, gross film that has not just a few funny moments but a lot of them. It is a whole slew of Saturday Night Live skits rolled together fitting well by Dodgeball director Rawson Marshall Thurber. The cast includes a very good looking Jennifer Aniston, a not surprisingly capable comedian Jason Sudekis, surprisingly good Will Poulter, Adult World star Emma Roberts and a flat Ed Helms.

"It's not us that's changed. It's the town." Sound familiar? The premise of this, 'wish I did' flick, has something to do with it. Who would bet that the teaming of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost would be so enjoyable. They are enjoyable. This is a buddy, beer, sci-fi flick (kinda) that has its moments while it slips in and out of good filmmaking, and, well, real moments.

Emotionally Disturbed Soothsayer, Cheap Bastard, Unforgiving Sociopath... coming out of Jobs the movie one wonders just who Steve Jobs was. What one does get is a piercing tribute to the virtues of Gen-X defiance and nonconformity that, in the case of Jobs also includes impatience, imagination and innovation. Ashton Kutcher mimics Job's voice and walk cadence to perfection, I am not sure he got his evil genius down quite as well. One thing for sure, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

Baseball's Last Hero: 21 Clemente Stories
I so wanted to really like this documentary on my favorite baseball hero, Roberto Clemente. It just didn't click on all 8 cylinders for me. Filmmaker Richard Rossi is a prolific actor with TV, film and broadway chops that would make most blush but his artistic flair mixing re-creation wiht actual footage over-laced with documentary style storytelling is a bit hard to stay with. One thing for sure, Clemente was a hero on all accounts and Mr. Rossi shows a respect for him that is easy to see.

Directed by the great Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, of 'Great Expectations', 'Y Tu Mamá También', 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' and 'Children of Men'; and written by Cuarón and his son Jonás Cuarón, this film delivers by asking more questions than it tells. Despite all of life's pitfalls and let downs, is it worth it? Is there really no place like home? That is the underlying theme to Gravity. Set behind a beautiful and unforgiving backdrop of Earth and Space we find two marooned astronauts caught up in the aftermath of human error, trying to get home. Soon we learn that as the broader picture suggests, one of them has become as distant from life as the stage the film sets for our view. Do we have an overpowering will to live? You may find out...

Jericho (as seen on netflix) - Season 1 and 2
Ask yourself, why are so many post-apocalytic stories set in the Heatland of the U.S.? "Jericho" was a TV series that centers on the residents of the fictional town of Jericho, Kansas (but the series was filmed in Van Nuys, California) in the aftermath of nuclear attacks on 23 major cities in the U. S. It ran on regular cable from September 2006, through March 2008. Not unlike another great sci-fi series, Jericho was canceled after its first full season because of poor ratings. A fan campaign was able to convince CBS to bring the show back for a seven-episode second season but was then canceled even though it was ranked #11 on TV Guide's "Top Cult Shows Ever" in 2007... but what do the fans know. BTW, why are so many post-apocalytic stories set in the Heatland, it must be the corn.

Well I went to go see Captain Phillips because all critics of any caliber need to be able to speak about Tom Hanks films. The film starts out slow giving you introspective snipits about the man played by Hanks. It does so because the film is about Captain Phillips and based on his memoirs. It is not about off-shore pirating and the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. Even with its title, it is hard to get that at first glance. Captain Phillips is directed by Paul Greengrass, of the Bourne Trilogy, Bloody Sunday, United 93. It feels like a United 93 movie until the last scene. Then...wow!

Escape Plan, a film starring John Rambo and the Terminator (aka Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger). It is a likable pairing not hurt by the need to ruin the moment by adding bullcrap dialog that turns the scene into a Saturday morning muscle flick. If you can get by the fact that these dudes are old and the escape mechanics might be a little far fetched, you will have a good time. Directed by Mikael Håfström who is also a screenwriter. His films run the gamut from the simply awful The Rite to glimpses of greatness as in 1408.
